Meticulously reproduced from a valuable portfolio by a notable 19th-century French artist, 124 black-and-white illustrations capture the lavish devices and grand sweep of Louis IV-era Baroque design. A gorgeous population of elaborate architectural ornaments, decorative motifs, and border elements, this collection of royalty-free art will inspire ideas for — and immediately embellish — a host of craft, design, and graphics projects. An exhaustive reference for artists and Baroque design enthusiasts.

Nice book, lots of images very useful. So nice I actually bought two of them for reference purposes. Would buy again no regrets. Many ideas. Massive variations of ornate French Baroque ornamentation you can use for inspiration, carving ideas, crafting, design, drawing, etc. Endless possibilities. Plus, it is history. I have ordered many books on ornaments, found many quite disappointing, This one however I found very crisp visually. Nice amount of various ornaments with some cut out close ups. not an instructional book for learning to draw ornaments however very useful.

Republished unabridged from the final comprehensive edition, this work contains the largest single-volume collection of classical art motifs ever compiled. It reproduces material from Greek and Roman, medieval European, Islamic, Renaissance, baroque, and early nineteenth-century art, architecture, and design—in all, presenting artists, crafters, and students with more than 3,000 designs.

Featured design elements include networks, Gothic tracery, geometric designs, akanthos leaves, lotus ornamentation, animal ornamentation, grotesque figures, fret bands, chains, interlacements, rosettes, undulations, spirals, link borders, cresting borders, finials, crockets, gargoyles, foliations, panels, repeated ornaments, and hundreds of other elements. Other plates show decorated pottery vases, religious utensils, weapons, furniture, lamps, jewelry, and other artifacts, in addition to heraldic motifs and ornamental letters.

Not only does this book contain a huge assortment of extremely clean and scannable examples of ornamental designs from different periods and cultures, but also provides diagrams and information you can use to create your own original designs in a given style. This may be the last book I buy (except newer copies of THIS book!) on ornamental design.

This book has been in print since 1888! Yes, it's that good! It's a bound version of an earlier work that was a folio. Forty years ago, my art teacher showed me his copy. I went out and got one. It's still on the shelves, but price has risen. It a collection of drawings from many sources: Cathedrals, Estates, Chateau, public buildings, museums and their contents! All collected before the Franco-Prussian war. Many things that no longer exist in this world. If you wish to depict life in the dark ages, the renaissance, Atlantis, Troy, the enlightenment, Hyboria, Byzantium, Rome, Carthage, etc., YOU NEED THIS BOOK!!!
